Engineering the Arts
My brain is very engineering coded. In secondary school, I did well in the math classes. Further Mathematics and economics were my easiest classes. I barely had to read to study to pass those exams. However, the art classes, and creative writing assignments were hard for me. English was fine as long as I did not have to write. Reading and summarizing stories and paragraphs was fine, writing a story or drawing still life felt impossible.
The Start
So, in 2016 I took an apprenticeship with an animation company named Ajebotoons and worked closely with the founder. Drawing was still a problem for me, but in this position, I only needed to animate already drawn cartoon characters and draw them for reference. Animating them was very natural. We used 2D animation software to animate the characters. All I had to do was move the character "bones" at the right frames. Learning what bones to move, what frames to move them at, and which motions to delay, when to use motion blur took a little time, but I achieved those during my time there. What I did not get good at, however, was drawing.
Part of my job was to draw the characters in new poses (which would then be used in the tweening software) by following their character designs. This was much harder, mostly because it was more creatively involved. So I had to do something much harder. I had to just keep trying, with no assurance that I would improve that skill.
